What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is the medical profession that main concentration is on disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous system and nervous system, and the impact they play on general health. Chiropractic care focuses on neuromusculoskeletal issues, including but not limited pain from back, neck and joints. Chiropractors or chiropractic physicians take a hands-on drug free approach that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have a broad level of diagnostic skills. They are trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as offering nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling. Spinal Manipulation is the most common chiropractic procedure by Chiropractors. Through manually applying controlled force into joints that have restricted moved as result of injury restoration of joint mobility can be achieved. Tissue injuries can be caused by a single traumatic event or can be the effects of longer term issues such as repetitive movement causing stress in the joint or tissue area of affected. Through Manipulation joint and tissues supporting the joints restores mobility reducing levels of pain and muscle tightness. This allows toxins to be flushed out and muscle/tissues to heal. Rarely do such treatments result in discomfort however some mild soreness may be the result that typically passes within 24 to 48 hours. Chiropractic care in most cases are the primary method of treatment for lower back pain or discomfort in other joints. At times it may be complementary support for other medical professionals, Chiropractors will often partner up with other health professionals whenever a patient’s condition warrants co-management.
What are some common techniques used by Chiropractors?
Chiropractors are trained in a variety of techniques that are hands on as well as some equipment/tool based. Techniques are designed to increase spinal mobility, improve joint range of motion and reduce pain. There is no one plan that can be used for every patient for every condition. Treatment plans are formulated and respective techniques. We will just summarize a few of the most common techniques used by Chiropractors below.
Probably the most common technique used is Spinal Manipulation. This is a drug free hands-on techiques of manual manipulation of the spine. Your Chiropractor will adjust your spine and surrounding muscles back to a normal or original position. This will retrain the spine and muscles into a much healthier positon thus improving the spines state of functionality. This usually relieves pressure on nerves which relieves or reduces pains associated.
Thompson Drop technique is extremely powerful and highly popular with Chiropractors. If you have ever watched a video or been to see a Chiropractor you will be familiar with this technique. It is simply analyzing the length of your legs to determine hip and spinal alignment. This technique is used in conjunction with a drop table. Chiropractors will use a series of gentle thrusts targeting specific joints and/or tissues. These gentle thrusts are meant to get in deep to allow the joint/muscle to be further manipulated and adjusted back into alignment.
A very popular technique used by Chiropractors is the Gonstead Chiropractic technique. This was highly popularized in the 1920’s and 100 years later is still used to adjust and align joints. This technique pinpoints treatment to specific joints. Manipulations typically will adjust several joints in an area that may be misaligned but often Chiropractors find that only one joint may be misaligned and the Gonstead Technique is put into action. Below is a video that demonstrates the technique being used and you will be able to see an instant result once the technique is completed. Notice as you are watching that the entire technique is used during the examination and treatment phase of the video. Again this technique is used to adjust a specific joint.
Another technique that targets joins that are not part of the spine is called Extremity Manipulation. These techniques are used when a total body adjustment is being used. You can expect to have Shoulders, hips, Feet, legs, arms, hands all muscles adjusted using specific Extremely Manipulation when brings the joint back into alignment and stretches and restores accompanying muscles associated with those joints.
There are many other techniques used by Chiropractors to help relieve pain and treat patients. There is a wealth of knowledge and information on the net spend a bit of time researching to better understand how Chiropractic care can be a huge benefit to you. Get aligned and see how great you feel.
